C. R. Jones

Courtney Ronald Jones is a portrait painter and fine artist who has come from a lineage of art instruction that can be traced back directly to the ateliers and academies of 19th century France and Italy. The focus of his training, at the Watts Atelier of the Arts in Encinitas, California has been on mastering traditional techniques in drawing and painting of representational subject matter, which were developed and refined by 20th century artists such as George Bridgman, Frank Reilly and Fred Fixler.

After working for many years as a commercial illustrator, he has transitioned into the realm of fine portraiture with a desire to merge his classical aesthetic with a modern approach to picture-making.

Courtney received his Bachelors Degree in Studio Art from the University of California, San Diego in 1996. In 2001 he began his education anew at the Watts Atelier studying with artists such as Ron Lemen, Erik Gist, Jon Foster, Jeremy Lipking and Jeffrey Watts in classes and workshops. Courtney now is an instructor there, and has taught many courses in illustration, anatomy and portrait painting. He has also traveled extensively to teach workshops and seminars around the country and internationally in Japan, Korea and India.

He has exhibited with the La Jolla Art Association as well as other group shows around the world. He is a Signature Member of the San Diego Portrait Society and has won numerous top awards for his portrait work in the annual all-member shows, including the Peoples’ Choice Award in 2007 and Best of Show in 2011.

Courtney currently lives in San Diego, California.
